AOC 1 - Turning Loss Into Love by Starting a Foundation Tony Butler

The Story

In 2005, Tony's mother Helen was diagnosed with stage-3 lung cancer. She had no medical insurance, adding to the shock of the diagnosis. Tony turned to the internet to let his heart out, and committed to supporting his mother in any way possible.

In response to the blog post, friends and family reached out. They offered love, support, and whatever help they could give. All of this evolved into a fundraising effort called Hope for Helen, and they raised over $58,000.

Helen fought a long and tough battle with cancer. With signs of recovery, Tony announced to his mother that they would continue to hold fundraising efforts for charities, and change the name to Hope From Helen. "That's awesome!" she said.

Unfortunately, due to further complications, Helen's condition worsened. She passed away with her family by her side on October 26, 2006.

The Mission

Today, Helen's kind and loving spirit is carried on with Hope From Helen. Her endless hours of dedication to give back is reflected in the numerous volunteers and artists behind Hope From Helen.
